Gen 3 Walrein (ADV UU revamp)

[OVERVIEW]

Walrein cements itself in the metagame as the overall bulkiest Water-type available. Its defensive stats allow it to keep popular Pokemon such as Scyther, Nidoking, Gligar, and Dragon Dance Altaria in check. Walrein's typing and ability in Thick Fat grant it key resistances to Water- and Fire-type, making it suited to deal with the likes of Rain Dance Omastar and Ninetales. Furthermore, due to its STAB on Ice Beam, solid Special Attack stat, and access to disrupting moves in the form of Encore, Walrein isn't an easy Pokemon to take advantage of.

However, Walrein's part Ice-typing plagues it with undesirable weaknesses to Fight- and Rock-types, which hampers its reliability against the likes of Aggron and Golem. It also doesn't provide valuable utility in the form of Rapid Spin, which makes Blastoise a fierce competitor. Walrein is also prone to be worn down by residual damage and repetitive hits due to its lack of reliable recovery.

Set Description
=========

Due to its high HP stat, solid defense, and ability to scare off some of the common Poison immune Pokemon, Walrein makes for an effective user of this set. Substitute blocks any attempt from the opposing Pokemon to cripple Walrein with status effect and is sturdy enough to withstand Seismic Toss from the likes of Hypno and Clefable. Toxic slowly wears down the opposing Pokemon and works well in tandem with Substitute and Protect, as Walrein can abuse these moves to safely watch the poisoned foe progressively losing its health. Protect also allows Walrein to regain health thanks to Leftovers, scout on which move Choice Band users lock themselves into, and avoid Explosion from the likes of Camerupt. Ice Beam is the preferred STAB move as it discourages Vileplume, Nidoking, and Nidoqueen from trying to absorb Toxic, invalidates Altaria which could heal it oof with Rest or Natural Cure, and dents Scyther and Gligar.

44 EVs in Speed allow Walrein to outspeed 70 base Speed Pokemon such as Solrock, Lunatone, and Hitmontop without investment. The remaining EVs are spent in HP and Defense in order to retain enough bulk to check physically offensive Pokemon such as Scyther and Nidoking and to make sure that the Substitute can take a Seismic Toss and a Return from defensive Kangaskhan. Investing in Special Defense can be considered to have a better margin against offensive Omastar.

Team Options
========

Walrein is unable to prevent Swords Dance Tentacruel from setting up on it. Qwilfish and to a lesser Omastar can also easily down several layers of Spikes in front of Walrein. Slowking, Golduck, and Poliwrath can also bypass the threat of Toxic by using Rest or Substitute and proceed to set up. Therefore, fast Electric-types such as Electabuzz, Manectric, and Electrode are teammate of choice due to their ability to pressure the aforementioned Water-types. Hitmontop is another good partner as it can get rid of the Spikes that bother Walrein and deal with other Pokemon that don't mind Toxic and do well against Walrein, most notably Rest Kangaskhan and Aggron. Hypno can be considered as an answer to Electric- and Fighting-types and to some Calm Mind users such as Grumpig, on top of bringing Wish support to further help Walrein. Other backbones include Cradily, which keeps Kangaskhan and Electric-types in check, Muk, which deals with Tentacruel and has enough bulk to handle Electric-types, and Kangaskhan, with check Electric-types, checks some Calm Mind users, and can pass Wish to Walrein.

Set Description
=========

Walrein can choose to fully focus on keeping offensive threats in check with this set. Protect guarantees free Leftovers recovery, scouts on which moves Choice Band user are locked into, and covers Walrein should the opposing Pokemon use Explosion. Ice Beam is the STAB move of choice due to its ability to hit the likes of Scyther, Gligar, Nidoking, and Altaria super effectively. Earthquake targets Tentacruel which could otherwise set up in front of Walrein with Swords Dance. It also dents Lanturn, Muk, Aggron, Electric-types, and Fire-types. Surf is another STAB attack that hits Lunatone and Solrock while retaining a strong hit on Aggron and Fire-types. It also does a lot of damage to Omastar in rain. Roar prevents Pokemon such as Grumpig, Slowking, Golduck, Swords Dance Tentacruel, Poliwrath, and Calm Mind Misdreavus from setting up in front of Walrein by forcing them out. It also allows to scout the opposing team. Encore has a similar utility by locking the opposing Pokemon into a move, thus allowing Walrein's teammates to come into the field more safely. Encore doesn't guarantee that the opposing Pokemon can't effectively set up and can be reliant on Walrein's teammates to force it out. However, unlike Roar, it works in a last Pokemon scenario, and tends to bother defensively oriented Pokemon more effectively by locking into moves such as Protect. Toxic cripples bulky Pokemon such as bulky Pokemon such as defensive Kangaskhan and Hypno which Walrein struggles to significantly threaten otherwise and gives an edge against opposing Walrein and Blastoise, at the cost of making Walrein unable to prevent various Substitute and Rest users such as Grumpig, Slowking, and Golduck from taking advantage of Tentacruel.

HP and Defense are maximized to allow Walrein to take hits from physically offensive threats such as Kangaskhan, Scyther, Nidoking, and Gligar as effectively as possible. More investment in Special Defense can be afforded to take hits from Offensive Omastar more easily. Leftovers is invaluable as Walrein's main source of recovery.

Team Options
========

Wish support from Kangaskhan and Hypno can be very beneficial for Walrein due to its lack of immediate recovery. They also make solid defensive backbones against specially offensive threats, mainly against Electric-types that pressure Walrein. Clerics such as Altaria, Vileplume, and Granbull are good partners due to their ability to cure Walrein of the status effect it might have to take while trying to switch into the likes of Ninetales and Gligar. Vileplume and Altaria in particular also make competent checks to Fighting-types such as Hitmonlee and Primeape and, in Vileplume's case, to Electric-types as well. Walrein struggles to effectively discourage Omastar and Qwilfish from covering the field with several layers of Spikes most of the time. Therefore, spinners such as Hitmontop, which also ease the pressure Walrein has to handle while checking various physical threats thanks to Intimidate, and Sandslash are teammates of choice. Cradily is another good defensive partner due to its ability to handle Electric-types as well as Normal-types such as Kangaskhan which can play around Walrein. Since Walrein fails to do much against most defensive Pokemon such as Hypno and most Water-types, Pokemon with enough offensive presence to pressure these such as Kangaskhan, Scyther, and Grandbull can be considered as well.

Set Description
========

Walrein can choose a more offensive approach while still retaining defensive merits, making it an good candidate for the lead slot as it doesn't succumb easily and doesn't force passivity. It distinguishes itself from other offensive Water-types thanks to its STAB Ice Beam, allowing it to pressure Vileplume and Meganium more effectively than its competition while cleanly OHKOing Altaria. Surf targets Fire-types such as Ninetales and Magmar as well as Rock-types such as Lunatone, Solrock, and Aggron. The third slot is dedicated to an Hidden Power meant to damage opposing Water-types. Hidden Power Grass is the recommanded option to hit Omastar as hard as possible in order to prevent it from setting Spikes up, which is a very significant lead match up. It also has the added benefit to do a lot of damage to Lanturn and Quagsire. Hidden Power Electric, on the other hand, pressures Tentacruel and Qwilfish, the second in particular could rack up Spikes in front of Walrein without much trouble otherwise. Encore prevents set up sweepers such as Tentacruel, Grumpig, and Slowking from setting up in front of Walrein. It can also lock its target onto an undesirable move, such as a recovery move that can be PP stalled by Walrein, making it tedious to handle defensively. Roar is an alternative to deal with the aforementioned set up sweepers, to scout the opponent's team, and can be effective when used in tandem with Spikes.

The Special Attack is maximized to get the aforementioned notable KOs. 44 Speed allows Walrein to outspeed Pokemon that seat at base 70 Speed such as Solrock, Lunatone, and Hitmontop. The remaining EVs are dumped into HP to improve Walrein's ability to take hits. Leftovers further enhance its survavibility.

Team Options
========

While Walrein has the tools to prevent Tentacruel from setting up fearlessly, it still remains a nuisance as it can take most Walrein's rather easily. Therefore, pokemon that can keep it in check such as Muk, Quagsire, and Misdreavus make good partners. Walrein tends to attract specially bulky Pokemon such as Hypno, Kangaskhan, and Slowking, and can lock them into a non attacking move, thus allowing wallbreakers such as Scyther, Kangaskhan, and Pinsir to get on the field and pressure the aforementioned Pokemon more easily. With Encore or Roar, Walrein can force a lot of switches. Therefore, Spikes users such as Omastar make good partners and provide a solid back up for Walrein which cannot handle Pokemon such as Scyther and Kangaskhan as well without more investment in defense. Electric-types heavily pressure Walrein with their super effective STAB, especially Lanturn since it resists most Walrein's assaults. Consequently, Pokemon such as Nidoqueen, Kangaskhan, Quagsire, and once again Muk are teammates of choice.

Other Options
=============

Rest, with or without Sleep Talk, allows Walrein to fully recover and make it less susceptible to Toxic, but is very unreliable and the sleep turns can be easily exploited by the opponent. A set consisting of Curse, Earthquake, Ice Beam, and Rest can serve as a win condition, but Walrein's weaknesses, lack of physical STAB, and reliance on Rest make it fairly easy to play around.

Checks and Counters ===================

**Electric-types**: By virtue of its typing, Lanturn can switch into Walrein without much trouble and threaten to cripple it with Thunderbolt, but it has to watch out for Toxic, Earthquake, and Hidden Power Grass. Ampharos has enough special bulk to withstand several Ice Beam, does a large amount of damage with Thunderbolt, and can bypass Toxic with Heal Bell, but it has to respect Earthquake and assaults from Offensive Walrein. Other Electric-types such as Electabuzz, Manectric, Electrode, and Raichu also threaten Walrein, but have more trouble switching into its attacks.

**Toxic immunities**: Substitute + Toxic variant of Walrein is unable to keep Tentacruel from freely setting up with Swords Dance. The offensive variant also has fails to significantly damage it most of the time. However, Walrein can turn tables by running Earthquake and can be awkward for Tentacruel to fight with Encore, Roar, or Hidden Power Electric. In a similar manner, Qwilfish can abuse Walrein by setting up layers of Spikes in front of it, but by a smaller margin due to Qwilfish's low special bulk. Muk can take Walrein's hits rather easily, save for Earthquake, and damage it with Sludge Bomb. Aggron doesn't care about anything Substitute + Toxic Walrein does and can hide behind a Substitute or fire off powerful Rock Slide, but must avoid Surf and Earthquake.

**Fighting-types**: Hitmonlee and Hitmontop have sufficient special bulk to take Ice Beam well enough and pressure Walrein with their super effective STAB. Hitmonlee has to beware of Protect if it's using High Jump Kick, however. Poliwrath resists Walrein STAB and can hide behind a Substitute and threaten to set up or to fire off a powerful Focus Punch, as long as it doesn't get forced out by Encore, Roar, or a super effective Hidden Power. Primepae doesn't switch into Walrein easily but can perform an OHKO with a Choice Band boosted Cross Chop.

**Calm Mind**: Grumpig and Golduck can take cover behind a Substitute and safely set up Calm Mind in front of Walrein. Slowking and Misdreavus can bypass the threat of Toxic with Rest and proceed to boost their stats with Calm Mind. However, Walrein can prevent their attempt to sweep with Roar or Encore.

**Kangaskhan**: Walrein usually fails to outdamage Kangaskhan's Rest loop and can get PP stalled or slowly worn down as a result. Some variants have enough bulk to maintain a Substitute that withstands Ice Beam from Walrein, allowing Kangaskhan to heavily dent Walrein with Focus Punch afterwards.

**Residual damage**: Toxic and Will-O-Wisp outweight Leftovers recovery and heavily hamper Walrein durability as a result. Spikes are also very troublesome aa they limit Walrein's ability to switch into the threats it's supposed to keep in check.
